Day 122: Cape Town 2 (Part 2)

May 30, 2012

So when I left off, it was Saturday night and Jas and I had just got back to the backpackers. We went to bed after watching some episodes of Warehouse 13.

The next morning, we got up, and because it is Cape Town, most of the shops were open! Hooray! So we spent the day looking at vintage shops and random boutiques (and I will compile a list and post it up here some day. Probably when I’m back in Melbourne and have nothing in particular to write about, though there are lots of things I want to write about when I’m back in Melbourne, mostly general stuff about South Africa, advice, places to see, how to get around, that kind of thing).

I bought a belt (that actually fits me! In every single shop we went into, if Jasmine saw belts, she would pick the smallest one and try it on me, and they were all too big by far), and a black leather corset, and a wicker fish bag. Very happy! And cheap too, compared to what they would cost in Melbourne! Jasmine got very tired in the midafternoon, so we went back to the backpackers for her to have a nap, because I had a plan…

You may or may not have known that the moon that night was the fullest and closest to Earth for the whole year, meaning that it would be very bright, and I had wanted to climb up either Table Mountain or Lion’s Head to have a look at Cape Town from above. So we thought that climbing Lion’s Head in the middle of the night would be amazing. At about midnight, we left the backpackers to take a cab to the base of the mountain. After a false start (the driver had to call a friend to ask where it was, so we decided to find another one), we got to the start of the walking trail, and started walking up. According to a few people we talked to, lots of locals go up Lion’s Head on full moons, but since it was so late, we thought it would be quite empty, and we were right. We passed maybe 10-15 people on the mountain, all on their way down, and there were only two other people at the top when we were there, taking pictures of the moon. Either way, it was quiet, and a warm night, and a very pleasant walk! So now the good stuff: the pictures! And be warned, there are lots, or at least there will be if the internet lets me upload them!

These are from the bottom up. Top one is from the bottom of the mountain, and the bottom one is from the top of the mountain. And here is the mountain itself. Not the best photo, but it was taken at about 2am. With no light except for the moon.

Anyway, we were at the top bit! The very, very, very top! We came back down again, and called the taxi (the one who had dropped us off at the bottom of the mountain), but he said it would take at least 20-30 mins to get there, so… We walked back. All the way. It did take us a while, but you know, we’d already walked up and down the mountain, no reason not to walk a little further. We were hungry and tired when we got back, so after stopping at a street vendor for a quick fix dinner (there were lots out because Long St is where all the backpackers party).

I’m going to leave it there, because I don’t want the internet to decide (like last time) that it can’t be bothered uploading ALL the blog, so instead cuts off after a paragraph or so.

Lots of love!

(I will try to write as much as I can while I’m still in Africa, but I actually leave in a few days for Melbourne, and I’ll be in Melbourne in a week! Woo! Don’t worry, I will keep writing until I am up to date, and then start on some fillers – basically advice for anyone who wants to travel around the areas I’ve been in. If you have questions, just message me, or comment or whatever, and I’ll see about answering the questions in a post!)

Day 104: Cape Town and Other Things. (Part 2)

So last time I blogged I was about halfway through describing the first Cape Town trip. Yeah. I put ‘first’ there deliberately. We maaaaaaay have done a second trip to Cape Town since then. I have a lot to catch up on…

Day 92: Cape Town and Other Things. (Part 1)

April 30, 2012

So as some of you may be aware, Jasmine and I had been back from Botswana barely a day before we decided that a trip to Cape Town would be a good idea! We just got back a little while ago, and this is what we did:

Day 57: Pretoria and Namibia (Part 3)

March 28, 2012

Part 3: Monkeys! This is a much shorter post than the last one, mostly because all the relevant things happened in an hour, as opposed to over four days. Still, there are some nice photos!

March 26, 2012

Ok, so quite a bit has happened since my last actual content post (meaning ones with pictures and stuff I’ve been doing), so I’m going to split it all up into three different posts. At least, I think it will be three.
1. Voortrekker Monument (17/03/12)
2. Namibia (21/03/12 – 24/03/12)
3. Monkeys  (25/03/12)

Day 45: Pretoria and Lesotho (Part 2)

March 15, 2012

I HATE COMPUTERS SOMETIMES! I was writing this, left it temporarily (to go to the supermarket), came back to find that my computer had FREAKING RESET ITSELF to install USELESS UPDATES, meaning I have to completely rewrite this! Anyway, continuing on from our arrival in Semonkong…
